Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Taylor Made 36 inch long steel gas strut for boat hatches. Now this gas strut is designed to replace a worn out or damaged strut on your boat's hatch lid. It will extend to ease lifting your hatch lid, and it will compress to gently close your hatch without slamming. It is a heat treated steel construction which is very durable, and they do use a corrosion resistant coating which won't rust even in saltwater areas.
And it is a ball and socket installation on each end. It attaches to the ball studs on the inside of your boat's hatch. The connection type is a 13 millimeter ball socket with a spring C clip, and it does easily install in minutes. There's no special tools required. What I wanted to do is zoom in, so we can show you what I'm talking about. Here's the ball socket.
And if you notice wrapped around it is this clip. So what you want to do is just pry the C` clip, just like that, to where it unhooks from there. And then you can slide it right out of the ball socket. And there's your C clip. So when you're removing this, you just pop that C clip, remove it from the ball and socket.
When you go to put the new one on, put the strut onto the ball, and then what you'll do is after it's on the ball, just insert this into the two holes, push it back around and it clips into place, and that'll lock it onto the ball. Very simple installation and removal. Now when you do install this, you do want this inner rod portion to be facing down. And it is always recommended to replace these gas shocks in pairs. The length again on this is measured from the center of this ball socket to the center of this one is 36 inches. The compression force is 80 pounds and the quantity is for one strut. But that should do it for the review on the Taylor Made 36 inch long steel gas strut for boat hatches..
